Golden Knights Sweep Avalanche, Reach Third Stanley Cup Final

The Vegas Golden Knights are heading back to the Stanley Cup Final after a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in Game 4 on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena. The win completed a four-game sweep of the Western Conference Final, sending the top regular-season team home after scoring just seven goals in the series.

Cole Smith scored the game-winner in the third period, and Carter Hart made 28 saves to preserve the lead. The Knights will face the winner of the Eastern Conference Final between Carolina and Montreal.

“We checked our assess off, that’s what stands out to me,” Knights coach John Tortorella said. “You win in this league by checking. It’s something we’ve been concentrating on, and I think we’ve gotten better and better at.”

Vegas held Colorado to seven goals in four games, a testament to their defensive structure and Hart’s goaltending. The Avalanche, who led the NHL in goals during the regular season, were stifled at every turn.

“They played really well and made it super difficult for us to create quality looks and when we did, he made the saves,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. “We ran into a buzz saw.”

The Knights advanced to their third Stanley Cup Final in nine seasons, two months after hiring Tortorella to replace Bruce Cassidy. They are now four wins from their second championship.

“Obviously, it’s super exciting right now, but we have a lot of work to do still,” Hart said. “Prepare for the next game. We have such a tight group here.”
