Golden Knights on Verge of Sweep: Game 4 vs. Avalanche Tuesday

The Vegas Golden Knights have a chance to close out the Western Conference Final in four games Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena, a scenario that seemed unlikely after the first period of Game 3.

Trailing 3-0 after 20 minutes Sunday, the Knights erupted for five unanswered goals to stun the Colorado Avalanche 5-3 and take a commanding 3-0 series lead. It was the largest comeback in franchise postseason history.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever been in one like this,” coach John Tortorella said. “I’ve been in a few of them. It’s two good teams going at it. I’m proud of our club.”

The Knights are one win from their third Western Conference championship in nine seasons and a second trip to the Stanley Cup Final in four years. They have swept only one previous series — the 2018 first round against Los Angeles.

“We’re not trying to look at this any differently,” forward Brett Howden said. “We’re not trying to approach the game any differently. We want to keep improving our game, and we’re going into the next game with the same mindset to win a game.”

Goalie Carter Hart rebounded from allowing three goals on Colorado’s first 12 shots to stop the final 23 he faced, finishing with 32 saves. He has a .942 save percentage in the series.

“He’s been great for us,” Howden said. “In a lot of games there’s momentum swings, and he’s done an incredible job keeping us in games and turning the momentum back to our side.”

The Avalanche, who won the Presidents’ Trophy, will face elimination for the first time this postseason. Defenseman Shea Theodore expects their best effort.

“I think the fourth win is always the hardest to get,” Theodore said. “We’re going to expect their best. For them, it’s win or go home.”

Game 4 is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at T-Mobile Arena, airing on ESPN.
