Gelof’s groundout in 10th lifts A’s past Angels 3-2

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Nick Kurtz scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on a fielder’s choice groundout by Zack Gelof, giving the Athletics a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night.

With the bases loaded and one out, Gelof hit a grounder to shortstop Zach Neto, who forced out pinch-runner Carlos Cortes at second. But second baseman Adam Frazier struggled to transfer the ball, and Gelof was initially called out at first. The A’s challenged, and the call was overturned, allowing Kurtz to score from third.

Mark Leiter Jr. retired the Angels in the bottom of the 10th for his fourth save. Joel Kuhnel (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth. The Angels have lost 11 of their last 13 games.

Nolan Schanuel gave the Angels a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the first inning off A’s starter Luis Severino. Severino went seven innings, allowing two runs and three hits while striking out 10.

Shea Langeliers doubled off the left-center wall with two outs in the sixth, and Kurtz singled up the middle to drive him in, cutting the lead to 2-1. Kurtz extended his on-base streak to 44 games, the longest in the majors this season.

In the seventh, Darrell Hernaiz singled to left to score Gelof from third, tying the game and chasing Angels starter José Soriano. Soriano lasted 6 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs and six hits with seven strikeouts.

The Athletics, who plan to move to Las Vegas in 2028, next face the Padres on Friday night in San Diego. Left-hander Jeffrey Springs (3-4, 3.93 ERA) will start for the A’s against Padres right-hander Walker Buehler (3-2, 5.01).
