The Las Vegas Aces announced Wednesday the signing of guard Chennedy Carter to a training camp contract, adding a dynamic scorer who has been out of the WNBA since the 2024 season. Carter, 27, averaged career highs of 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals on 48.7 percent shooting in her lone season with the Chicago Sky in 2024.

Carter’s arrival brings both talent and controversy. In June 2024, she delivered a shoulder check to Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark away from the ball, a play later upgraded to a flagrant-1 foul that sparked widespread debate about physicality in the league. As a restricted free agent that offseason, Carter did not receive a qualifying offer from Chicago and went unsigned by any WNBA team.

She spent the 2024-25 season in China, leading her overseas league in scoring. Aces coach Becky Hammon witnessed Carter’s ability firsthand in 2024, when Carter averaged 26 points over three games against Las Vegas, including a 25-point, three-assist, zero-turnover performance in a Sky upset win on Aug. 25.

Guard Dana Evans, who re-signed with the Aces this week, was a teammate of Carter’s on the 2024 Sky. Hammon also likely consulted with former Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon, a close friend, about Carter’s fit.

Drafted fourth overall in 2020 out of Texas A&M, Carter has dealt with injuries and off-court issues in the past. Her training camp contract is a non-guaranteed, league-minimum deal, meaning she will compete for a roster spot alongside Kierstan Bell and Cheyenne Parker-Tyus, who also signed training camp contracts this month.
