The Las Vegas Raiders have fired head coach Pete Carroll after one season, owner Mark Davis confirmed Monday. The decision comes after a 4-13 campaign that left the team with the NFL’s worst record and the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft.
Carroll, 73, was hired in January 2025 amid much fanfare but never found traction. The Raiders ranked near the bottom in both offense and defense, and the team lost nine of its final 11 games. Davis cited the need for a new direction.
“We appreciate Pete’s efforts, but the results were not what we expected,” Davis said in a statement. “We are committed to building a championship organization, and we believe a change is necessary.”
The firing creates winners and losers within the organization.
Winners
John Spytek — The general manager, hired alongside Carroll, now gets a stronger voice in the next coaching search. Spytek was not Carroll’s biggest advocate and can now target a coach more aligned with his vision.
The Raiders — While the constant turnover is embarrassing, sticking with a failing experiment would have been worse. The No. 1 pick provides a major selling point for prospective coaches.
2026 coaching candidates — Another open job in a desirable market with a high draft pick is a boon for those seeking head coaching opportunities.
Losers
Carroll’s legacy — The Hall of Fame coach’s ill-fated return to the sideline will be a footnote on an otherwise stellar career. His one-year stint in Las Vegas produced the worst record of his tenure.
Brennan and Nate Carroll — The coach’s sons, both on staff, faced heavy criticism for the offensive line’s struggles and nepotism charges. Brennan Carroll oversaw a unit that allowed the fourth-most sacks in the league.
Tom Brady — The minority owner was part of the decision to hire Carroll after missing on top target Ben Johnson. Brady also endorsed quarterback Geno Smith, who threw 18 interceptions. The losing season underscores the challenge ahead.
The Raiders will now search for their fourth head coach since 2021.
