In a 2-14 season, Jamal Adams’ health and position switch stand out for Raiders

For the 2-14 Las Vegas Raiders, finding bright spots in a lost season is a challenge. But veteran linebacker Jamal Adams has provided one, staying healthy for all 16 games while making a successful transition from safety to linebacker.

Adams, who signed with the Raiders before training camp, has recorded 41 tackles, a sack, two quarterback hits, and four tackles for loss. He has played 409 defensive snaps (39 percent of total) and earned a team-high linebacker grade of 67.2 from Pro Football Focus, according to the team.

“That was amazing,” Adams said of playing a full season. “Obviously, it was one of my goals that I wanted to complete.”

The 29-year-old came to Las Vegas after a three-year stretch where injuries limited him to just 15 games. In 2022, while with the Seattle Seahawks, he tore his left quadriceps muscle off the kneecap. Though he returned the next season, he struggled to perform at his previous All-Pro level.

“I just couldn’t be myself,” Adams said. “I couldn’t really practice the way I wanted to.”

That began a two-year odyssey in which he played for three teams and appeared in only 14 games. When Raiders coach Pete Carroll — who coached Adams in Seattle — offered him a chance to play linebacker, Adams embraced the change.

“Things happen in this game, and obviously, I got hurt, and that kind of knocked me down,” Adams said. “I had to kind of start all over with my whole kind of career and just pushing forward. And whatever opportunity got thrown my way, just try to conquer it.”

Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham praised Adams’ resilience. “I’m happy for him,” Graham said. “Having gone through those injuries and things of that nature, for him to be able to get a whole season in and be able to be out there playing football, and I’m sure he’s finding joy in that. So, I’m happy for him.”

Adams, a three-time Pro Bowler from 2018-2020, said he wants to continue learning the linebacker position. “It’s cool, man,” he said. “Obviously, it’s a different opportunity, a different perspective. But, man, again, I’m just grateful for the opportunity. I just want to continue to learn that position and get better at it.”

The Raiders close the season Sunday at home against the Kansas City Chiefs.
