RCR Retires No. 8 After Kyle Busch’s Death, Saves It for His Son

Richard Childress Racing will no longer field the No. 8 car in the NASCAR Cup Series after the sudden death of Kyle Busch. The team announced Friday that the number will be reserved for Busch’s 11-year-old son, Brexton, when he reaches the top level of stock car racing.

The No. 8 Chevrolet, which Busch was scheduled to drive in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, will be renumbered to No. 33 for the remainder of the season. Austin Hill will pilot the No. 33 entry.

In a statement posted to social media, RCR explained the decision: “Richard Childress Racing has elected to suspend use of the No. 8 and will run the No. 33 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and beyond. Kyle Busch was instrumental in the design of RCR’s stylized No. 8 and it has become synonymous with Kyle and an important symbol for his fans and the NASCAR industry. No one can carry it forward to the level that he did. The No. 8 is reserved and ready for Brexton Busch when he is ready to go NASCAR racing.”

Busch, a two-time Cup Series champion and Las Vegas native, died at age 41 after a sudden medical emergency. The team’s move ensures his legacy number stays within the family.
