ANAHEIM — The Athletics erupted for 12 two-out runs Tuesday night, overwhelming the Los Angeles Angels 14-6 at Angel Stadium. Nick Kurtz delivered three hits and five RBIs, while Zack Gelof and Brent Rooker each homered and drove in three runs.
Kurtz, the reigning American League Rookie of the Year, extended his on-base streak to 42 games — the sixth-longest in franchise history — with an RBI single in the third inning. He added a two-run single in the sixth and a two-run double in the eighth.
The AL West-leading A’s snapped a three-game losing streak. Reliever Justin Sterner (2-3) earned the win after stranding two runners in the fourth inning.
Angels starter Reid Detmers (1-5) allowed eight runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He retired the first seven batters, five via strikeout, before Jeff McNeil and Darrell Hernaiz singled in the third.
Mike Trout hit his 12th homer of the season in the third inning, a solo shot that tied him with Rafael Palmeiro and Alex Rodriguez for the most home runs by any opponent against the Athletics since the franchise moved to California in 1968 (43). Trout also scored his 600th run at Angel Stadium, the most in team history.
The Angels trimmed the deficit to 6-4 in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to Trout and a two-run single by Vaughn Grissom. But Sterner induced a flyout from Jorge Soler to end the threat.
The A’s pulled away with eight runs over the final four innings, including Gelof’s solo homer in the seventh and Rooker’s two-run blast in the eighth.
