Bishop Gorman, Centennial Set for 5A Baseball Showdown at Durango

The Southern Nevada high school spring sports postseason is in full swing, with baseball, softball, and boys volleyball tournaments heading toward their climaxes. In Class 5A baseball, Bishop Gorman and Centennial have emerged as the winners’ bracket finalists and will face off Thursday at Durango at 7 p.m. in a game that could determine the Southern Region champion.

Centennial, the No. 1 seed from the Sky League, advanced with a 5-0 shutout of Faith Lutheran on Saturday. Bishop Gorman, the top Mountain League seed, beat Desert Oasis 2-0 in the other winners’ bracket game. The Gaels and Centennial are both undefeated in the tournament.

Meanwhile, elimination games on Thursday include Desert Oasis vs. Palo Verde at 1 p.m. and Arbor View vs. Faith Lutheran at 4 p.m., both at Durango. The winners will continue to Friday’s elimination rounds at a neutral site, with the championship scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Durango.

In Class 4A baseball, the state tournament is underway with first-round games Wednesday. Silverado, Clark, Mater East, and SECTA are the top seeds in their respective leagues. The tournament will conclude May 16 at Sierra Vista.

Class 3A and 2A baseball league tournaments begin Thursday at Boulder City and The Meadows, respectively. Class 1A’s Southern Region tournament starts Thursday at Indian Springs.

In softball, the Class 5A Southern League tournament continues Wednesday with the winners’ bracket final between Arbor View and Palo Verde at Durango. Arbor View beat Shadow Ridge 12-1 and Palo Verde defeated Coronado 14-4 in Tuesday’s winners’ bracket games. Elimination games Wednesday feature Centennial at Shadow Ridge and Bishop Gorman at Coronado.

The Class 4A softball state tournament opened Wednesday, with Faith Lutheran, Legacy, TEAM, and Desert Oasis as top seeds. The championship is set for May 16 at Sierra Vista.

In boys volleyball, state tournaments are underway across all classifications. In Class 5A, top-seeded Centennial swept Sierra Vista, and Shadow Ridge and Arbor View also won quarterfinals. Semifinals are Thursday: Basic at Centennial and Arbor View at Shadow Ridge. The championship is May 13 at Sunrise Mountain.

Class 4A volleyball quarterfinals are Wednesday, with top seeds Sky Pointe, Mojave, Desert Oasis, and Liberty in action. Semifinals are May 11, and the final is May 13 at Sunrise Mountain.

Class 3A volleyball semifinals are Thursday, with Boulder City hosting Virgin Valley and Coral Academy hosting Moapa Valley. The championship is May 13 at Sunrise Mountain.
