UNLV Lady Rebels win 4th straight Mountain West title, beat Boise State | UNLV Basketball | Sports

Seconds after the final buzzer sounded Wednesday at Cox Pavilion, “All I Do Is Win” by DJ Khaled blasted through the speakers as the UNLV women’s basketball team gathered on the court to pose with its latest trophy.

It was the perfect anthem, as the Lady Rebels had just defeated Boise State 83-53 to clinch the Mountain West regular-season title for the fourth consecutive season.

The lyrics, “All I do is win, win, win, no matter what,” surely resonated amid the celebration.

The Lady Rebels (23-5, 15-1 Mountain West) will have the No. 1 seed as they seek to add a fourth straight conference tournament title March 9-12 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

That would mean a fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

That pursuit was top of mind for fifth-year coach Lindy La Rocque after Wednesday’s victory.

“I’m just so incredibly proud. Honestly, I don’t know if there’s a ton of words yet,” she said. “You try to guard yourself from really — in the right way — opening your heart up too much, because we aren’t satisfied.”

La Rocque said that her team made a list of target accomplishments for this season, and Wednesday marked the completion of just the first one.

Still, La Rocque used the word “monumental” to describe the moment, while senior forward Alyssa Brown said being part of the sustained dominance is “kind of unbelievable.”

Sophomore guard Amarachi Kimpson led UNLV with 23 points, while senior guard Kiara Jackson had 12. Freshman forward Meadow Roland added 16 off the bench, and sophomore guard Macy Spencer had 12.

Brought the energy

Junior guard Natalie Pasco scored 12 for Boise State (16-13, 6-10), which looked primed to wage a battle with UNLV early.

The teams traded leads to start, and the score was tied at 15 after the first quarter. But the Rebels burst out to a 40-28 lead at halftime.

The scoring explosion came as UNLV capitalized on four Boise State turnovers to put together a 14-3 run to take a 29-23 lead with 2:53 remaining in the first half.

The advantage kept building from there, and La Rocque credited the initial close score to the Lady Rebels’ excitement.

“We knew that we wanted to play hard and we wanted to win,” La Rocque said. “I think we had more air balls in the first half than we’ve had, like, all season, frankly.”

Once she got the group to “settle down,” La Rocque said it all came together.

“We got our pace, we got some defensive stops, we got out in transition, and then you kind of look up … and there’s some cushion,” she said. “So I’m proud of our group for sticking with it, for having the energy, and then just helping them funnel it in the right way.”

Looking ahead

UNLV athletic director Erick Harper watched the blowout and praised La Rocque for her sustained dominance.

“It’s just absolutely fabulous,” Harper said of the four-peat. “It just shows the consistency of Coach Lindy and her staff, of what they do every single day. They work hard, they’re committed, and they recruit the (right) ladies for their system and for their program.”

For Brown, who has already played in three NCAA Tournaments, winning the conference tournament is par for the course. It’s given her a level of confidence that could help the team.

“I wouldn’t say there’s pressure going in,” Brown said. “I think we know that we have a target on our back, but we try to stay focused on ourselves and our inner circle.”

Even if the Lady Rebels don’t win the Mountain West tournament, Harper believes they deserve an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

“There is no reason why they shouldn’t,” he said. “They play a very tough schedule, and they should be in at-large because they’ve earned it.”
