Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been released from the Brown County Jail as prosecutors continue investigating allegations of domestic abuse against him. The 28-year-old former Raiders star was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of strangulation and suffocation and other offenses stemming from an incident over the weekend.
District Attorney David Lasee said Wednesday that no formal charging decision has been made. “Our office has requested additional investigation, as there is reason to believe that additional evidence may exist that would impact whether criminal charges are appropriate, and what charges would be issued,” Lasee said. “The investigation remains open and is ongoing.”
Police responded to a complaint about Jacobs around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Hobart/Lawrence Police Chief Michael Renkas. Jacobs’ lawyers—David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Clarence Duchac—said they are pleased he is out of jail. “We encourage everyone to keep an open mind while the matter is fully reviewed. We remain confident that, once all of the evidence is gathered and evaluated, it will confirm that no charges should be brought against Josh in the future,” they said.
Jacobs is the Packers’ top returning rusher after running for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2025. That followed a 2024 season in which he amassed 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns while earning his third Pro Bowl selection. Over his seven-year career, including five with the Raiders, Jacobs has rushed for 7,803 yards and 74 touchdowns. He led the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards in 2022, earning All-Pro honors.
The Packers began organized team activities this week. On Tuesday, the team issued a statement saying it was aware of the matter and “as it is an ongoing legal situation, we will withhold further comment.” Head coach Matt LaFleur echoed that stance Wednesday. “I know there’s going to be a lot of questions about Josh,” LaFleur said. “I’m going to stick with the statement that we put out as an organization and just let the process play out.”
LaFleur declined to discuss his personal reaction, whether he addressed the arrest with the team, or if the Packers have communicated with Jacobs. Asked about preparing for the possibility of playing part of the season without Jacobs, LaFleur said, “I think a lot’s going to happen between now and then.”
Green Bay’s backfield depth is thin behind Jacobs. The Packers’ second-leading rusher last season, Emanuel Wilson, signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Quarterback Jordan Love is the second-leading returning rusher with 199 yards. The Packers re-signed Chris Brooks, who rushed for 106 yards on 27 carries last season and 183 yards on 36 attempts in 2024. MarShawn Lloyd, a 2024 third-round pick, missed all of last season and appeared in only one game as a rookie due to injuries. “I think he’s done everything he can in his power to put him in the best possible position,” LaFleur said of Lloyd. “He’s just going to have to go out there and prove it.” Other running backs on the roster include Damien Martinez, Pierre Strong and undrafted rookie Jaden Nixon.
