DALLAS — The Golden Knights are making big changes for Game 5 of their first-round playoff series against the Dallas Stars.
The most notable one is at goalie.
Adin Hill will make his first start of the postseason Wednesday at American Airlines Center, coach Bruce Cassidy said.
The switch comes after the Knights lost two straight games with goaltender Logan Thompson in net.
Thompson started the first four games of the series. He allowed four goals total in the Knights’ wins in Games 1 and 2 in Dallas. He then gave up six goals combined in the Stars’ wins in Games 3 and 4 at T-Mobile Arena.
Thompson did tie a career high with 43 saves in Game 3 and did more than enough to keep his team in the game.
Cassidy still decided to turn to Hill, who was the Knights’ primary starter during their run to a Stanley Cup championship last year.
Hill was 11-4 in the playoffs after replacing an injured Laurent Brossoit in the second round. He posted a .932 save percentage to help the Knights win their first championship.
“At the start of the playoffs, we figured we would probably need to use both goaltenders. It’s how we ran our team this year,” Cassidy said. “You never know how it’s going to play out. I thought Logan played well. Put us in a good spot. It’s 2-2. He’s done his job.
“Adin’s been through this. That’s a little bit that goes into the decision. He’s an experienced guy that’s come into this situation before.”
The question is whether Hill can capture his postseason form again.
He battled injuries this season and went 5-9 his last 15 appearances. That’s what opened the door for Thompson to begin the series in net.
Cassidy is also shaking things up with his forwards.
He’s breaking up his top line by moving Tomas Hertl to left wing next to center Jack Eichel and right wing Jonathan Marchessault. Ivan Barbashev will move to fourth-line right wing to replace Keegan Kolesar, who will be a healthy scratch.
Left wing Pavel Dorofeyev will come into the lineup to make his playoff debut. He will be on the second line with center Chandler Stephenson and right wing Mark Stone.
Dorofeyev had 24 points in 47 games in the regular season and played well in his opportunities with Stephenson and Stone.
“He’s just grown from last year to this year. Just kind of showed what kind of player he can be,” Stephenson said. “He just keeps it a simple game and I think that benefits him.”
Cassidy said he hopes the move gets Stephenson and Stone going. The two have just one point each this series.
The Knights are making changes on the blue line as well.
Alec Martinez is shifting to the top pair to play with Alex Pietrangelo. Noah Hanifin will drop to the third pair and play with veteran Ben Hutton, who will play for the first time this postseason. Defenseman Zach Whitecloud will be a healthy scratch.
